There is more than one way to capture gameplay - depending on what you game on, there will be both hardware and software options. For us, using a dedicated Capture Card device, such as AverMedia Live Gamer Portable has worked out for the best. There are other options on the market, but this one works for us, so why change it? Live Gamer Portable from AverMedia is a cool little gadget that makes recording videos really easy. It can record from PC and most video-game consoles and mobile devices. It even supports recording some content where HDCP could prove an issue. It has an HDMI, 3,5 audio and Component inputs and can capture gameplay even without a computer in a PC-Free mode. In this mode, the card only needs to be charged via USB - something most consoles can provide, and the video is recorded on an SD card. This mode naturally has some limitations, but overall - what a great and handy idea, that makes the portability of this device stand out. Streaming is also possible, although for us, streaming via the enclosed software has never worked and we had to use OBS. Which is fine.
Not all is perfect with the device and one serious downside to consider is very low level of reliability. We are on the third card currently, and already, some issues are starting to appear.
This card is perfect for an entry-level experience. It will allow you to produce solid content up to 720p60 or 1080p30 and can record most modern consoles and devices. It won't record NES, unless you buy an upscaler. Something to have in mind.

This card is almost identical in its features to the red Live Gamer Portable. It lacks some of the options though. Firstly, no way to record from component inputs - HDMI only. Second, there is no PC-Free mode here. Third, the included software will not let you record from iOS devices or other devices where some of the content may be HDCP protected. What it lacks in features, in makes up for in ease of use. This is a plug-play and record device that is accessible and does the job.
